Discovering Tranquility and Tradition at Kiyome Saryo: A Hidden Gem Near Atsuta Shrine

Hey there, my dear friend,

Are you in search of a spot where you can immerse yourself in a uniquely Japanese and serene atmosphere while enjoying a cup of tea? Say no more! I’ve got the perfect place in mind. Follow me on this little adventure!

Today, I’m taking you near the Atsuta Shrine, one of Japan’s most prestigious shrines, but our actual destination is “Kiyome Saryo,” located right in front of it. “Kiyome” signifies purification of the soul, and “Saryo” refers to a place where tea is enjoyed.

Just look at this place, my friend! The facade speaks volumes of its long history, having been in operation for 240 years right in this spot.

Upon entering, you’ll first notice a corner dedicated to souvenirs – a sweet reminder of your visit after enjoying some tea.

The actual tea service area is just beyond this. Considering today’s a Sunday, it’s bustling, but fortune smiles upon us – there’s just one spot available. For those seeking tranquility, a weekday visit is recommended.

What I absolutely insist you try at Kiyome Saryo is the matcha and “Kiyome mochi” set. Matcha, a refined and traditional Japanese tea, is made by whisking powdered tea with hot water. “Kiyome mochi” is a specialty mochi eaten for spiritual purification, famous among the offerings of Atsuta Shrine, filled with sweet azuki bean paste.

Now, let’s taste the Kiyome mochi. Apologies, but you’ll have to use your imagination for this part. Piercing the mochi with a bamboo skewer reveals its tender resilience, a testament to the painstaking process of finely milling the rice. The paste inside, smooth and velvety, melts away in your mouth.

By the way, in Nagoya, there was even a TV commercial that likened the softness of Kiyome mochi to a girl’s cheek.

Pairing it with matcha? The tea’s subtle bitterness and sweetness create an exquisite harmony. The creamy texture of the matcha beautifully complements the mochi’s soft sweetness, enhancing the overall flavor experience.

Sounds irresistible, doesn’t it? But remember to take your time and savor each bite. Kiyome mochi has a way of vanishing all too quickly if you’re not mindful. Enjoying it alongside a leisurely chat elevates the experience to something truly special.

Interestingly, I brought my nephew here just the other day. He’s turning 20 and shared the exciting news of having a girlfriend. I suggested, “Bring her here. She’s sure to adore it.” He listened with sparkling eyes. It reminded me of my own experiences of bringing a girlfriend here, stirring up a mix of sweet and nostalgic emotions.
